Brother Yusuf's wife with Martha Swan of John Brown Lives!, holding up the portrait of Brother Yusuf during the ceremony.

This year, a part of my John Brown Lives! project was to do a portrait of a man named Brother Yusuf. Martha commissioned me to do this portrait so that it could be presented to his wife at this year’s ‘John Brown Days’. Late Brother Yusuf was a warrior for so many. He was known to speak up against modern slavery, thus his connection with John Brown – who was anti-slavery. This portrait was presented to his wife during the ceremony where he was being honored for his work with helping the intercity youth in engaging with nature, right up here in the Adirondacks – where I was born and raised. It was nice to know that so many young people showed up for the ceremony. Must be nice to leave that kind of footprint. Aside from the portrait I also design John Brown Day posters and for the 2015 poster, click on the images below.

This is the cover I illustrated  that led me to the other jobs: John Brown Day and The Adirondacks Hall of Fame; launching my personal encounter with the Civil Rights movement and meeting some great people like Martha Swan who ends up hiring me to design posters and programs for John Brown Lives!.
